Brutus Buckeye will not be the only common fixture at Ohio State ahtletic events during the coming years. Monday Nationwide announced a multi-year sponsorship of all 36 varsity sports at OSU.

During a press conference outside Ohio Stadium, OSU’s Director of Athletics Gene Smith put to rest rumors that the sponsorship would result in renaming Ohio Stadium and lauded the sponsorship as a “win-win partnership.”

Nationwide will donate an unspecified amount of money to OSU as part of the agreement. Amy Shore, Nationwide Insurance’s regional vice president of Ohio and West Virginia, said the amount was in the multi-millions.

As part of the partnership, Nationwide’s logo will appear on signs throughout Ohio Stadium, as well as the back of tickets, sports schedule cards and posters.

Smith said the partnership will help less prominent teams such as the women’s hockey team the most.

“It’s the other sports and supporting organizations that are always struggling to do cutting edge stuff,” Smith said, adding that with the partnership will help these teams share the limelight with football and basketball.

However, the university’s varsity sports teams won’t be the only ones benefiting from the sponsorship. The marching band and the Block “O” student organization are among groups that will receive donations from Nationwide.

As part of these donations, Nationwide has given Block “O” 100,000 white rally towels with Nationwide’s logo on them to pass out to students during home football games as well as money for the group’s general fund.

The Columbus-based insurance and financial services company has also bought new uniforms for the marching band to replace the 20-year-old uniforms currently being used, said John Woods, OSU’s marching band director.

OSU and Nationwide’s partnership marks the second time the company has come together with a university. Nationwide has a similiar partnership with Penn State, though not with the same involvment the company will have with OSU, said Erin Herf, a spokeswoman for Nationwide.

“We find it very fitting that the home company sponsors the home team,” Smith said.
