The music someone listens to is not necessarily representative of where he or she is in life and who he or she is as a person. So why does it seem that every person in college has to like Indie or independent music? I, for one, enjoy pop music, pop culture, country and rock.

I am not saying students have to like pop culture and the music. The majority of us, however, have grown up with it and then when we get to college we are expected to just drop what we have always known.

Being in college doesn’t mean college students have to like Indie music. The Indie music I have heard is boring to me. When peers find out I like pop music and country, they look disgusted.

I know *NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys are no longer on the scene and Janet Jackson is having a hard time coming back after her “wardrobe malfunction,” but there is still a relatively decent amount of music to be enjoyed other than Indie music.

I just can’t get myself to sit and listen to Indie music without being forced to do so. It is boring and lacks the same catchiness and appeal pop possesses.

Don’t misread me, I don’t like the cookie cutter idea, but sometimes pop music is a mold and it is what I enjoy. It is the best part of pop music. Every few years the idea of “new” becomes something different and gives people the chance to get into a new type or style of music without having to change the station they are listening to.

It is great how pop culture now includes not just pop, but rock, country and hip-hop on the same radio station everyone listens to anyway. It gives the best of all worlds.

I will have you know, good pop music has kept me going through the years. Britney Spears may be nothing more than a mother to her kids and a wife to K-Fed, but her pop music got people dancing once-upon-a time. It was good; she had good beats to dance to.

Currently, country music is very pop inspired as well.

A country song on pop stations is easy to find. Rascal Flatts is a country group getting some good airplay on the Top 40 stations.

There are some great rock/country acts as well; Toby Keith, and Kenny Chesney have upbeat guitar rifts and bar/club friendly beats for even some Indie-loving college students to have some great music to listen to.

Just because some enjoy Indie music, doesn’t mean others can’t give pop, rock and country a shot. Don’t forget, these genres of music are great to sing and dance to.

Pop music may be taking a bit of a hit right now with the inclusion of other genres of music in its domain, but let me tell you Gnarls Barkley and Panic! At The Disco are good for pop music. They are entertaining and fun to sing and move to.

The beats and songs are not as contagious as pop music. Just because you listen to Indie music instead of pop or country doesn’t mean you are more intellectual.

Indie music on college campuses is completely overrated.
