In honor of National Soup Month, the Lantern has compiled a list of ten pop culture references to the steamy-hot, healing food.
1. Bowlng for Soup – This Texas punk rock band pulled its name from comedian Steve Martin’s routine, ‘Bowling for S***,’ which is derived from ‘Bowling for Dollars,’ a 1970s TV gameshow.
2. Andy Warhol’s “Canned Soup” – Andy Warhol, a 1960s pop artist, chose to depict Campbell’s 32 varieties of canned soup after Muriel Latow, a gallery owner, pitched the idea to him.
3. “Chicken Soup for the Soul” – These books are collections of personal accounts compiled by motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen. The title was chosen because chicken soup is supposed to have a healing effect on ill people.
4. The “Seinfeld” Soup Nazi – This is the sixth episode of the seventh season and first aired in the U.S. on Nov. 12, 1995. A famous Manhattan chef is known for his delicious soup as well as authoratative demands for ordering and paying for his soup. Customers not meeting his strict instructions are denied their order and refunded their money as he yells, “No soup for you!”
5. The Soup Dragons – A Scottish alternative rock band from the late 1980s. The band was named after a character from a British children’s TV show, “The Clangers.”
6. “The Soup” – This show originally called ‘Talk Soup,’ was revamped and renamed after low ratings. It airs on E! and is filmed in front of a small studio audience. It discusses pop culture and reality show moments of the week while host Joel McHale adds his own satirical commentary.
7. “Soup is Good Food” – 1985 Dead Kennedy song, featured on the “Frankenchrist” CD. The lyrics explore the concept of dispoable people in disposable jobs: “Soup is good food (we dont need you any more), You made a good meal (we dont need you any more), Now how do you feel (we dont need you any more).”
8. Linda Blair’s vomit in “The Exorcist” – This 1973 movie shows the possessed Regan vomiting a chunky green substance, which turns out to be Anderson’s Pea Soup. The crew originally tried Campbell’s, but didn’t like the effect. By the end of shoot, Blair actually did throw up because she hated vegetables so much. She also said if the soup hadn’t been shot out in perfect synch, it could’ve choked her.
9. Willy Wonka’s chewing gum – Violet Beauregade is the gum chewing champion, and she wanted to be the first to have Wonka’s three course meal chewing gum. The gum starts out with an appetizer: warm, creamy tomato soup, and by the end of the meal Violet is a blueberry.
10. “Chicken Noodle Soup” – This song actually originated as a dance in Harlem and spread over the airwaves in a song by Webster and Young B. Whereas the dance is complicated, the lyrics don’t go much deeper than the phrase, ‘chicken noodle soup’ over and over.
