The winter season calls for a modification of the normal makeup routine. Not only does the harsh change in humidity affect the skin, causing irritating dryness, it also quickly erases the favored facial glow from the departed summer sun. With a few tips to avoid skin troubles during the upcoming months, gearing up for the winter season is easy to do.
Moisturizing is key to healthy-looking skin and is even more important in the winter. The single, most important tool in the toiletry arsenal is a good moisturizer. The change in seasons causes skin to become dry, irritated and itchy, so the key to avoiding this problem is moisturizing.
Dr. McKelvey of Northeast Dermatology said people are more likely to experience skin problems in the winter months because of the changing humidity and overly washing the face. The recommended routine is to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize the skin twice a day.
“The secret is to moisturize after showers or baths because that is when your skin soaks up the most moisture,” Dr. McKelvey said. “It is best to use a soap-free cleanser like Oil of Olay Complete.”
Sunscreen is another fundamental tool in skin care. Protection from the sun is necessary 365 days a year, even though the sun might not be visible. UV rays are just as harmful in the winter months as they are in the summer, which means sunscreen use is essential everyday.
“Sunscreen is definitely important year round. Skin damage is the number one cause of aging, so it is very necessary,” said Annie Wright from Macy’s Clinique department at the Mall at Tuttle Crossing in Dublin. “It is best to use a moisturizer that has sunscreen built-in because it is two steps in one and make sure it’s oil-free.”
The dreaded “pale look” can be counted on during the winter months, simply because more time is spent indoors and away from the sun. Creating that facial summer glow is easily attainable, but it is important to stick to one’s natural skin tone.
When using a foundation that is too dark or light for their skin color, one usually winds up with the dreaded “makeup line” that appears between the neck and chin area. Seek a professional to assist in finding the right foundation. Makeup counters within department stores offer free consultations for any type of makeup question or application.
“Stick to your skin tone. Get a consultation to match your skin color with the right foundation, or use a bronzer on top to get a more natural glow,” Wright said.
If foundation is not enough, and the search is on for a longer lasting look, use self-tanner. Avoid the tanning beds and get that shine from the numerous kits that line the shelves this season. Sunless tanning lotions are simple to use, inexpensive and do not have the harsh consequences of tanning beds.
“I absolutely cannot stand tanning. It can cause skin cancer or premature aging, and it just freaks me out,” said Mary Zofko, a senior at Ohio State. “I have pretty light skin, so it gets pretty bad in the winter. I just use tanning lotions if I’m feeling too pasty because it’s safe and easy.”
With a few simple adjustments this season, skin care troubles will be a thing of the past.
