A 96th-minute strike by Penn State forward Liam Butts sealed Ohio State’s fate Saturday.

The freshman’s overtime goal pushed Penn State (4-1-1) past Ohio State (5-2) 2-1 in Columbus to end the Buckeyes’ five-game win streak.

Ohio State took 16 shots, 10 of which were in the second half, but could only manage a single score.

“I think we need to stay switched on all game,” sophomore midfielder Xavier Green said.

Head coach Brian Maisonneuve pointed to defensive mistakes as a primary reason for the loss.

“The disappointing part was that we talked about a commitment to defending, but we were left with two versus four in the back there,”  head coach Brian Maisonneuve said.

After a slow first half, both Ohio State and Penn State came out swinging in the second. Nittany Lion freshman midfielder Andrew Privett found the back of the net in the 55th minute, set up by a cross from redshirt junior midfielder Pierre Reedy.

Green scored his first career goal seven minutes later to tie the game.  After missing an opportunity in the 46th minute, Green struck oil with a wicked shot about 25 yards out which went right upper 90.

“It feels good to get the goal, but unfortunately it was not enough,” Green said.

Penn State took control in the overtime period, preventing Ohio State from placing a shot on goal before netting the game-winner six minutes in.

“We need to be better at everything,” Masionneuve said.

Masionneuve said that the Buckeyes’ poor defense cost them on the game-winning goal, as the defenders were slow to fill their gaps coming back to the ball.

Ohio State could not capitalize on golden opportunities including a 12th minute near-goal strike by redshirt sophomore forward Devyn Etling and 75th-minute chance by freshman forward Channing Chasten.

“We could have had two or three goals,” Maisonneuve said.

The Buckeyes’ struggles with set pieces continued Saturday, with an 0-for-4 finish converting corners into goals bringing their total to 0-for-45 on the season.

The Buckeyes’ next match will be on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home against West Virginia.
