The Ohio State softball team battled both Penn State and the elements yesterday as they swept a doubleheader from the Lady Lions at rain-soaked Buckeye Field. The Lady Buckeyes dominated the first game from start to finish with timely hitting and powerful pitching to win 6-0. The nightcap saw them take almost three hours to eke out a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in 10 innings. With the victories, OSU improved their overall record to 16-14, while upping their conference record to 4-6. Penn State dropped to 13-19-1 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten.”Sweeping a series like this is a great confidence builder,” said OSU coach Linda Kalafatis. “We hope today will catapult us into the rest of the season.”In the first contest, the Lady Buckeyes set the tone early by tattooing PSU starter Tanis Ambelang for five runs in the first inning on four consecutive hits.Buckeyes Candace Kollen and Cheryl Palaroan slapped back-to-back singles to open the game. After the two advanced on a double steal, left fielder Julie Bauman brought them home with a triple to right-center giving OSU an early 2-0 lead. The fun continued as Bauman scored on a sharp single by Jaime Chenevey, followed by Toni Hileman’s mammoth two run shot over the left field wall to give the home team a commanding 5-0 edge.OSU would tally one more run in the third inning to finish off the scoring.”In that first inning we just jumped on ’em and they couldn’t battle back,” Kalafatis said.Freshman pitcher Kristi Martin was unstoppable in the circle as she shut down the PSU offense, giving up only two hits while striking out four in six innings to earn the win. “I felt great out there after we exploded in the first inning,” Martin said. “My catcher called a great game.”In the second contest, pitcher Jodi Dolan survived a bases-loaded situation in the first inning by giving up two runs, only one of which was earned. After this initial scare, Dolan threw four shutout innings to keep the Buckeyes’ struggling bats in the game. With the score deadlocked 2-2 in the top of the 10th inning, Bauman singled to center field with one out. Chenevey came up next and popped out to the catcher for the second out of the inning.A single and a walk would load the bases for Dolan, who came to the plate 0-for-6 on the day. Dolan proceeded to line a double over the outstretched glove of Penn State center fielder Jodi Ricciardi to give the Buckeyes a 4-2 lead.”I really have been struggling at the plate and it was great to have the chance to help my team get the sweep,” Dolan said. The bottom of the inning saw Martin give up her only earned run of the day on a homer by Shannon Solsberg, but it was not enough for PSU as Martin picked up her second win of the day after five strong innings of relief. The Lady Buckeyes start all over again today when they play host to a doubleheader against Miami (Ohio) beginning at 3 p.m.
