Students who enjoy the nightlife of downtown Columbus can experience the big-city environment at the gym during the day.Wade and Marty Steen, both Ohio State alumni and co-owners of Body Life Fitness, have set their gym apart from the others in Columbus.Cement floors, high ceilings, exposed plumbing and contemporary track lighting, give the gym an industrial look like one typically found in Chicago or New York. The 10,000-square-foot gym is located in the same building that houses the Mekka nightclub at 384 Dublin Ave., just west of the old Ohio Pen site. The gym’s fitness trend features a progressive design, with alternative and sometimes live music, a coffee and juice bar and an atmosphere conducive to socializing.Mrs. Steen said the facility, classes, services and staff all add up to a great place for people to exercise and socialize. If people are going to spend a couple of days a week at the gym, it should be fun and people should not be intimidated to go, said Mr. Steen.”We are not a plate head gym with neon lights and people trying to turn into body-builders,” he said. Our target market is young urban professionals with active social lives who enjoy fitness and want to be healthy, said Mr. Steen. He said the gym attracts residents in German Village, Short North, Victorian Village and Italian Village. Body Life Fitness features Cybex strength training equipment, cardio-fitness machines, aerobics, yoga, boxing, full service locker facilities, massage therapy and even a dry cleaning drop-off and pick-up.To concentrate on good service, the gym limits its membership to 1,000 to avoid overcrowding.”We want to focus on service, not how many members we can get,” Wade said.At $49 per month, while it is not the cheapest gym in town, members get what they pay for, he said. The club is currently featuring a $99 special student rate for membership during June, July and August.
