It is doubtful that ‘Black Sheep’ and ‘Tommy Boy’ fans will be disappointed with Chris Farley’s most recent performance in ‘Beverly Hills Ninja,’ a recent release from TriStar pictures. Once again, Farley’s talent in the arena of physical comedy brings tears of laughter to his audience. Let’s face it, it is funny to watch the klutzes of the world make fools of themselves. But if Farley had hit his head one more time I was going to get myself some aspirin. In the film, Farley plays Haru, who believes that he is the Great White Ninja. Haru is an orphan who was raised by a ninja clan in Japan. His lack of skill, however, keeps him from becoming a ninja like the other young men. Nevertheless, Haru vows to save a young, attractive woman (Nicollette Sheridan) from her troubles. Haru leaves Japan for Beverly Hills to help her. Gobei, Haru’s brother and an accomplished ninja, is secretly sent to help him.To those who are able to watch a movie and not analyze every minute of it, this movie is fairly entertaining. It is obviously meant to be absurd and most certainly is. Don’t expect deep characters and a complex plot. The soundtrack to the film deserves to be mentioned, as well. It definitely adds humor to specific moments with songs from ZZ Top, Blondie’s ‘Rapture’ and Right Said Fred. The song ‘Tarzan Boy’ by Baltimora, another one-hit wonder group from the 1980s, and a Japanese version of ‘I’m Turning Japanese,’ an early 1980s hit, add much to the soundtrack. It is a great compilation of last decade’s greats.Although the film is very funny, Farley was much more entertaining in ‘Tommy Boy,’ opposite David Spade. Farley’s humor in ‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ depends mostly upon his character’s ignorance and clumsiness, whereas the chemistry between Farley and Spade earned most of the laughs in ‘Tommy Boy.’ Aside from Farley’s physical humor, the martial arts talent of Gobei, (Robin Shou from Mortal Kombat), is very impressive. Farley’s attempt at martial arts is also commendable. According to TriStar Pictures, Farley began martial arts training six months before filming. His abilities allowed him to perform nearly all of his own stunts in the film and do all of the work in his fight scenes.Farley’s comical stunts in the movie make it funny, but sometimes he should bring it down a notch or two.
