Tuesday night the lights at Bill Davis Stadium were on, the loudspeaker blared, but none of the names announced should have been familiar to even the most devoted Ohio State fan. The names were recognized by Ohio State baseball coach Bob Todd, however. The Grove City and Worthington Kilbourne high schools’ baseball teams squared off at the stadium, and so did the sons of the OSU baseball coach. Both Scott Todd and Jeff Todd were paired off as coaches of Grove City and Kilbourne, respectively, but after the game they were still brothers.Bob Todd said the pair were no more competitive than other brothers, but they disagreed.”Both of us want to win; we hate to lose, but when we leave the field we are brothers,” Scott Todd said. However, the outcome of the game could prove to be a source of ridicule.”None of this goes off the field, unless he beats us 21-7,” Jeff Todd said of the Kilbourne loss. This was not the first time that the two brothers stared at each other from across the field. Scott Todd attended OSU and spent five years playing for his father, while Jeff Todd played for Southern Mississippi. The teams met while the two were in college. The two admit to having similar coaching styles and said that their father was a great influence, but that he never pushed them into sports.”He always let us make our own decisions. He told us to do whatever we had to be happy. But he taught us to do whatever we do with everything we’ve got, and do it right,” Scott Todd said.Jeff, however, seemed to know that he wanted to be involved in sports before his older brother.”I’ve always been the competitive one, I could go outside and play sports all day long,” Jeff Todd said of the lifestyles the brothers have chosen.Bob Todd said the choice was always theirs and that they were always encouraged to do what made them happy.”It’s a great thrill to see your sons doing what they want to do,” Bob Todd said.
