News staff fired after joke paper
An April Fools joke went wrong when the entire student staff of Stetson University’s newspaper, The Reporter, were fired for publishing a joke paper called The Distorter.
The publication advocated rape as a joke in a sex-advice column, and another article referred to slavery as not being a bad thing.
University officials fired the entire staff, giving them 15 minutes to gather their belongings and leave. The locks on the doors to the newspaper were changed, and the newspaper was suspended for the remainder of the academic school year.
The top editor who was fired said the articles weren’t meant to be taken seriously, and as a result of the massive firings an underground newspaper will be started.
Contest encourages off-campus living
Last week at Purdue University members of the group Boilers Living Off Campus hosted an arm wrestling contest.
The idea was to show students that off-campus living was a good choice and they could still be involved. The group had the contest and gave out free food while passing out information about itself.
The group formed to help make students feel comfortable living off campus as well as to make sure they are still aware of school activities and have a say in city council meetings.
Another activity the group does every year is host an apartment fair to show students the numerous options they have for off-campus living.
Michigan silent about Naked Mile
The Naked Mile traditionally takes place at the University of Michigan, where students run a mile through campus naked. Usually the university warns student in several ways not to take part in this, however this year it is taking a different approach – Michigan is not doing anything about it.
The university believes if it leaves it alone, the event will eventually be phased out.
In the past, university officials warned people about the punishment for indecent exposure and talked to groups about the dangers of sexual assault.
In the past two years the event has dropped attendance rapidly, with those who still chose to run did so with underwear on instead of naked. This year the university felt the need for public education about the event was unnecessary.
Kent State enjoys music, food festival
The hip-hop group Nappy Roots made Kent State University’s FlashFest a huge hit among students last week.
Nappy Roots was the headliner, but several other musical groups also performed throughout the day. There were also many activities to participate in, such as a Coca-Cola giveaway contest and an Iron Man contest.
Many booths showed off goods, and vendors offered a wide variety of food. More students turned out for the event than expected.
