The Hopkins Hall Gallery is showing a new exhibit featuring four visiting artists, who introduced their work to students and faculty at the exhibition opening yesterday.

The artists — Franz John, Gretchen Garner, Suzanne Silver and Lucie Pribik — work in a variety of media, ranging from photography to painting to glasswork. Because each is a visiting artist, they will teach classes throughout the quarter in their areas of expertise.

Each quarter, the Department of Art accepts several applications for the position of visiting artist.

John, an addition to the photography department, and Pribik, a visiting artist to the painting program, are both from Berlin, Germany, and arrived only hours before the exhibit opened. John is already connected to Ohio State, having joined the art department as a visiting artist two years ago.

“This is a good opportunity to show the public my work, and it is great for them to have access to this exhibit,” John said. “I just taught my first class this quarter and I encouraged my students to come.”

The components of his work explore the issue of perception and how perception changes through the media. In one of his most interesting projects, John sat on top of a museum and used a scanner to take photographs of the earth’s rotation. He also uses data from plate tectonics and earthquakes in some of his work.

Silver, a longtime Columbus resident, is a visiting artist who will be working in the painting and drawing department.

Garner, who joined the photography department, recently moved from Sante Fe to join her family in Columbus.

“The theme to this work is recollection and looking back,” she said.

Although all of Garner’s works on display are still lifes, much of her work explores landscapes. She chose to use much of her previous work in the exhibit because she is teaching a studio lighting class.

The four visiting artists are featured in the main room of the gallery, and the pieces in the corridor feature work from new teachers.

Gallery director Prudence Hill said if students have never been to an art gallery, Hopkins Hall is a great place to start.

“Students are always welcome to come here,” she said. “Throughout the quarter, we have a vast variety of art on exhibit, and students can see hundreds of different pieces of work.”

This quarter, Hopkins will have six exhibitions, featuring work from all over the globe, including Canada and Germany.

The exhibit will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
