The Ohio State men’s hockey team won again to extend its unbeaten streak to nine, despite third period pressure from Bowling Green.
“I think we played well in the first and second periods,” OSU men’s coach John Markell said. “You have to give Bowling Green credit for not showing any quit at the end. We need to learn to finish teams off and not lose focus toward the end.”
Scott Titus, one of OSU’s best defenseman started the scoring trend when he received a pass from Paul Caponigri and JB Bittner. Also in the first, Rod Pelley blasted a shot by Falcon goaltender Jordan Sigalet. OSU led 2-0 after one period of play.
The second frame looked much like the first. Only in this period, the Buckeyes scored three.
“I think our second period was one of the best periods we have played all year,” Markell said.
Doug Andress, also known for his defensive prowess, scored twice in the period. Each of Andress’ goals had two helpers, as OSU moved the puck with precision.
“Everyone played well,” Andress said. “I think we gained a lot of confidence offensively.”
Caponigri also put a goal in during the second as OSU came into the third with a 5-1 lead.
The Buckeyes let down there guard a little bit and Bowling Green tried to jump back into the game, scoring two goals.
“In the beginning of the third, I think we came out a little too relaxed and they took advantage of us in the beginning of the second half,” Andress said.
The Buckeyes would hold on, Bittner added an empty net goal to seal the game with less than a second left on the clock.
The Falcon goaltender must of felt like one of the armies at Normandy as OSU fired 50 shots at him.
On the other side Mike Betz was solid in net except for the first goal, which seemed to buckle him at the time.
The Buckeyes and the Falcons face off again tonight at 7:05 p.m.
“They proved they are worthy of where they are in the league,” BG coach Scott Paluch said of OSU. “They bring a lot of depth to the lineup.”
OSU is second in the CCHA with an overall mark of 16-4-2. “For not playing for the last couple of weeks I think we came out very strong,” Pelley said.
OSU looks to finish off the second game, and up its unbeaten streak to nine.
“Bowling Green is a very talented team, I fully expect them to regroup for tomorrow,” Andress said.
