The ’90s are just the ’60s turned upside down. At least that what Mike Myers hopes. Who is Mike Myers? Oh, blessed phillistine. Myers is the star, writer and producer of “Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery” and its soon to be released sequel, “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.”Face it, either you or someone close to you can recite “Austin Powers” line by line. It slowly turned from a sleeper movie to spawning arguably the most anticiapated sequel since “Star Wars-Episode I.” The first salvo from “The Spy Who Shagged Me” is the better than average soundtrack. Boasting new music from Madonna, R.E.M and the Spice Girls’ Melanie G aka Scary Spice (!) and an apperance by the Who’s classic, “My Generation,” the star power is cranked up for this one. The bands either cover a ’60s song or do their best imitations of ’60s bands.Generally speaking, soundtracks are a mixed bag. Usually they feature songs that are only in the movie for three seconds, along with a selection of songs “inspired by the film” and then the latest signing by the label putting out the soundtrack.”The Spy Who Shagged Me” probably commits at least a few of these sins. For example, The Lucy Nation, newest kids on the Maverick Records label, contribute “Alright” to the proceedings. It’s a pretty unoffensive minor key fueled shuffle of a song but it stands out like a sore thumb compared to the other bands’ attempt to dress up in retro drag.Along those same lines, Melanie G and Timbaland’s cover of the Cameo classic “Word Up” is just odd and lethargic. Why “Word Up?” Why Melanie G? Why? It’s not bad but both G and Timbaland have had better musical moments. But don’t be discouraged, “The Spy Who Shagged Me” has some outstanding moments. The highlights? Lenny Kravitz turns in a soulful, atomic-fueled version of the Guess Who’s “American Woman,” stripping it down to handclaps and raw guitar riffs. Madonna’s “Beautiful Stranger” will inspire many a sun-drenched romp through the field, glade or nature setting of choice. And don’t miss Dr. Evil doing his best Will Smith imitation in “Just The Two of Us.” Well worth the price of admission, but it’s no Ming Tea’s “BBC.””The Spy Who Shagged Me” will make the fans happy and maybe recruit some “virgins.” Oh, behave.
