Watch out Ricky Martin — one of the biggest bands out of Cuba, Los Van Van, is coming to Columbus. Just as its name translates — Van Van is here — it will be here on Friday at 8 p.m. celebrating the one year anniversary of the restoration of the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St. Los Van Van has been called “the Rolling Stones of Latin Music,” by some critics as, according to Kelly Boggs, director of public relations for CAPA, which is organizing the event. She is excited to have the band come to Columbus for the first time in hopes it will bring along the huge success and popularity that it hails in Cuba. The sound of Los Van Van is more than the Latin dance like it is often described. According to a recent CAPA press release, it actually plays a distinct “songo” rhythm which Los Van Van created for itself from the combination of jazz, rock and numerous instruments including flutes, trombones and drum machines.According to the press release, the Los Angeles Times highlights the band as “expert at producing challenging music with deeply socially conscious lyrics dealing with everyday Cuban reality. Los Van Van is a charanga (flutes and violins), a salsa orchestra (edgy trumpets and trombones), and a premier rock ‘n’ roll band (electric bass and drums) all in one, and every note makes perfect sense.”Since Los Van Van consists of 15 members, it has room for several combinations of many instruments. The band has been playing for 30 years, with most of its current members contributing for the last 10 years. Los Van Van’s 24th, and latest album, “Llego…Van Van,” was released in August. Friday’s concert will be part of the tour promoting its new album. The two month tour will go across the country from Seattle to New York. Tickets for the show are available from CAPA Ticket Offices at the Ohio, Palace or Southern theatres, Riffe Center or any Ticketmaster location for $29.50 (main floor and first balcony) and $27.50 (second balcony). To charge by phone, tickets can be purchased at 431-3600 or 469-0939.
