Ohio State’s men’s soccer team put back to back wins together for the first time this season by defeating the Butler Bulldogs 2-1 Friday afternoon. The game winning goal was scored on a penalty kick by freshman midfielder John Tomaino after he was pulled down in the box.”Every team I’ve been on I’ve taken the penalty kicks,” Tomaino said. “I was pretty relaxed.”With less than two minutes to play Tomaino received the ball in the box. After a couple of quick touches he was tackled by a Butler defenseman. After some disagreement from Butler players and coaches, Tomaino calmly slipped the ball into the left corner of the net as the goalie dove the opposite direction.Tomaino noted this was the first time he had ever taken a penalty kick in that type of situation. After several questionable calls against both teams, Buckeyes head coach John Bluem commended the official’s decision in the final stage of the game. “It showed a lot of courage to make that call. The correct call,” he said. The Buckeyes had a goal disallowed in the first half when the linesman flagged a play offsides. After a scoreless first half, Butler got on the board in the 63rd minute. Butler’s Stephen Armstrong found teammate David Beck streaking towards the goal. Beck finished the play to give Butler a 1-0 lead. The Buckeyes tied the game in the 84th minute when Brooks Humphreys scored his second goal of the season, on a free kick from 25 yards out. Tomaino assisted on the play. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 4-3 on the season while Butler drops to 1-7. Ohio State will face Wright State on Wednesday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
