Chief misbehaves himself at conference

A Northwest Ohio fire chief has been relieved of duty for 30 days following accusations of improper conduct at a convention in June.

Swanton Mayor Tandy Grubbs sent Chief James Guy a letter outlining the reasons for his suspension. Some of the reasons include he drank alcohol and operated a fire truck, and he neglected his duties by allowing nonmembers of the fire department to ride on the fire truck. The incidents allegedly occurred during a volunteer fireman convention.

The village council is set to meet this week in order to discuss the suspension.

School district still on strike over contracts

Despite several hours of mediation, teachers and support staff for the Eastern Local School District in Beaver are still on strike. The union has been on strike for 42 days. Prior to the strike, they had been working without new contracts for several months.

The latest proposal from the school board offered more money toward wages and insurance, but was turned down by the union.

The Ohio Department of Education visited the district last month and said the district is meeting requirements to remain open during the strike.

Marijuana shop concerns council members

The Ohio Cannabis Society, an organization advocating changes in marijuana laws is planning to open a store in Warren, a decision upsetting area officials.

The store will sell books, magazines, tobacco products and other items. The organization also operates a similar store in Lakewood.

Council members are upset the store will be in the vicinity of several schools and churches, but acknowledge the store is not illegal because there is no illegal activity and no intent for illegal activity.

FBI uses to-be-imploded Cinergy Field

Those weren’t sonic booms Cincinnati residents heard coming from downtown on Tuesday night. It was the FBI conducting training exercises involving live ammunition and explosives.

Hamilton County officials said the FBI had been given permission to use Cinergy Field, which is scheduled to be imploded in December, for testing explosives and exercises.

Officials also said the county did not charge the FBI for the use of the stadium, given it is about to be demolished, and they would look into whether residents need to be alerted about any further exercises.
