EAST LANSING, Mich. – Pouring-down rain couldn’t keep the Buckeyes from a 37-13 stomping of host Michigan State Saturday.Ohio State added their own thunder late in the first quarter when sophomore free safety Gary Berry scored on an 45-yard interception return. Two minutes later, Berry recovered a blocked punt at the Michigan State 1, and stepped into the end zone for his second touchdown, putting OSU up 17-3.”I guess the good Lord blessed the interception to come in, and the (punt blocked) ball to bounce into my hands,” Berry said. The Buckeye defense has been fighting for redemption ever since its 31-27 loss to Penn State three weeks ago in which it gave up 316 yards on the ground and a late touchdown.”Everyone on our defense wants another shot at Penn State,” Berry said. “We can’t have that this year. We just need to keep winning.”The Buckeyes (8-1, 4-1) went into the Michigan State game coming off of a convincing 49-6 win over Northwestern last week in Columbus.”We need to keep having that same kind of effort,” OSU coach John Cooper said. “If you can play hard and can tackle, you’re gonna have a good football team.”The two quick touchdowns by Berry “basically kind of puts you behind the eight ball in the game,” said MSU coach Nick Saban.Berry’s first TD came off the first of two interceptions thrown by Spartan quarterback Todd Schultz. The Spartans were coming off of a 23-7 loss to Michigan last week, in which Schultz tossed five interceptions.”He gave up five picks last week,” strong safety Damon Moore said. “We thought we could get four or five ourselves.”The Buckeyes finished with two interceptions; both were thrown by Schultz.OSU’s second touchdown came courtesy of Marcel Willis, who blocked Paul Edinger’s punt inside the Spartan 25. Berry picked up the loose ball at the 1 and took a step for the TD.”That put their defense on the ropes and we gained a lot more confidence, a lot of momentum,” Moore said.MSU settled for its second field goal on the next drive, a 30-yard kick with three minutes left in the first quarter making the score OSU 17, MSU 6.Backup quarterback Joe Germaine directed the rest of the second quarter for OSU. He capped an eight-play, 71-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown pass to split end David Boston. The extra point put the Buckeyes up 24-6 with :32 left in the first half. The MSU offense was almost non-existent in the third quarter and didn’t gain a first down until two minutes were gone in the fourth.”They didn’t have a passing game,” Cooper said. The Buckeye defense “put a little heat on the quarterback.” MSU was held to 263 yards and 11 first downs compared with the Buckeyes’ total of 405 yards.Starting quarterback Stanley Jackson returned with eight minutes left in the third quarter. Jackson completed a 4-yard draw and a 4-yard pass before suffering a sprained ankle that kept him out for most of the third quarter. With 3:30 left in the third quarter kicker Dan Stultz hit a 43-yard field goal, pushing the score to 27-6.Ohio State’s first drive of the fourth quarter was quick and efficient. On four plays, the Bucks went 31 yards with Pepe Pearson’s 3-yard run giving the Buckeyes a 34-6 lead.As the rain kept coming down into the fourth quarter, it seemed the only colors in Spartan Stadium were the scarlet and gray worn by Buckeye fans who stuck it out until the game’s end. The only play of note missed by the absent Michigan State fans was a 47-yard pass from Schultz to Gari Scott with 8:57 left.”The weather played a part,” Cooper said. “I’m surprised at the outcome, to come in and win as convincingly as we did. Obviously we’re disappointed we gave up the long touchdown in the fourth quarter.”Third-string quarterback Mark Garcia saw some playing time in the fourth quarter, but only gained 9 yards, forcing the Buckeyes to attempt a field goal. Stultz’ 38-yard effort was true, providing the final, 37-13 margin. The Buckeyes next game is in Minneapolis where they will take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Metrodome.
