The University of Wisconsin women’s basketball program is set to begin what they hope will be remembered as their comeback season. After posting third place finishes in Big Ten action for the previous two years, the Badgers found last season’s sixth place ranking (tied with Penn State) hard to swallow.Averaging 8,536 people per game, “Badgerball” currently boasts the best attendance record in the conference.”The catalyst of this year could be the excitement of the sixth player around us (the fans), and their expectations and us knowing that we let all those people down,” head coach Jane Albright-Dieterle said. Armed with four returning starters and a few key recruits, coach Albright-Dieterle will begin her quest toward the Big Ten title and a NCAA Championship appearance.Senior guard Katie Voigt is one of the starters Albright-Dieterle will look to for leadership. She was Wisconsin’s leading scorer and best three-point shooter before being forced to sit out last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.Reinforcing the Badgers hopes for a better season are senior forwards Ann Klapperich, credited for scoring the bulk of Badger points last season, Jenny Rhodes and junior forward Tanisha Boston. With talented incoming freshman like LaTonya Sims, honored with a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/Nike prep all-American title; Krista Bird, considered by coach Albright-Dieterle as an offensive threat, and multi-talented scorer/rebounder Rachel Klongland, the University of Wisconsin looks forward to the opening of the season against Stanford later on this month.”I think that consistency is our key to being in the top four in the conference and to the NCAA tournament title,” coach Albright-Dieterle said.
