The Ohio State women’s hockey team began an emotional weekend when a 4-2 loss to Providence Saturday continued its winless streak. But on Sunday the Buckeyes flew by the Connecticut Huskies with a 6-2 win, ending their nine-game losing streak.
OSU dominated the first two periods, outshooting the Huskies 8-1 in the first period and 16-3 in the second.
Senior goaltender April Stojak played the full 60 minutes in the net and snatched 12 saves for OSU.
OSU women’s hockey coach Jackie Barto said winning stems from hard work.
“We are always confident. The key is to play hard for a full 60 minutes,” she said.
Senior defender and captain Emily Hudak said after the loss to Providence – the losing streak would end with the match against Connecticut.
“We’ll get ’em tomorrow,” she said.
On Saturday, the Buckeyes came out strong in the first period with sophomore Jennifer Desson scoring. Desson had just finished serving a two-minute checking penalty before she scored. Scoring not only the first goal of the game but also her first goal of the season, Desson was excited.
“It was a real positive feeling. Sitting in the box for two minutes gave me time to think about the game,” Desson said.
Stojak helped the Buckeye defense remain strong in the first period with her six saves.
The Buckeyes ended the first period with only two penalties.
OSU struggled defensively in the second period, allowing Providence to score three goals. The Buckeyes also took five penalties during this period.
Barto said her team had difficulty executing the basics during the second period.
“We stopped doing the little things, like moving and supporting the puck, and we took some bad penalties,” she said.
Desson said the team was too high strung in the second period.
“I think defensively we needed to be more calm,” she said.
Stojak once again battled for the team with six saves.
The third period looked positive after Desson scored her second goal of the game, but it was immediately followed by a fourth Providence goal.
Stojak finished the game with a total of 18 saves for the Buckeyes.
Barto said her team’s attitude is good in the beginning of a game like this, but it starts to dwindle if things go wrong for the Buckeyes.
Hudak said teamwork will push this team.
“We need to believe in each other more and get our teammates’ backs when they need it,” Hudak said.
The Buckeyes travel to Madison, Wis., where they will match up against the Badgers at 8:05 p.m. on both November 22 and 23.
