Jazz Moves Take 2, a production by BalletMet Columbus and the Jazz Arts Group of Columbus in conjunction with The Wexner Center for the Arts, combines the dynamic spectrum of jazz music and the graceful art of dance into one exciting journey.

The Columbus Jazz Orchestra, under the artistic direction of Byron Stripling, provides a soundtrack of jazz, blues, gospel, swing and big band that highlights the development and infusion of jazz music in American music.

The choreography, put together by Ron de Jesus, Randy Duncan, Maurice Hines, Stella Kane, Harrison McEldowney and Margo Sappington, demonstrates the differences in the genre of jazz music through a wide variety of dances. Each dance showcases the the BalletMet dancers, in both individual and group form, through many different styles.

The costumes in the production, designed by world-renowned Christine Joly, show the different time periods that the music goes through, including the 1920s and 1940s. Vibrant fabrics and textures add to the visual appeal throughout the production.

The program begins with “Future Vision,” which involves the entire company in a showcase of what jazz may look in the future. In the world premiere of “High C,” a single female dancer encourages a group of young men to compete for her affection with their best moves, all to the Big Band music of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. The spirited “Testify” celebrates gospel music and joyful dancing in a rousing end to Act 1. Later in Act 2, “The Ballroom” brings the racial divide of 1920s dance halls onto the stage, with one side demonstrating ballroom in a more controlled form and the other in a more free form. The show ends with the world premiere of “Bourbon Street,” which begins at a very somber funeral progression, but ends with a jubilant celebration of what many consider to be the birthplace of jazz: New Orleans.

The several instrumental numbers throughout the evening, including “The Colors of Jazz,” “Monk’s Mood” and “I Hope in Time a Change Will Come,” showcase the CJO’s ability to bring the spirit of jazz to life.

With both the physical and the audible, this program combines music and dance into an evening that truly captivates both jazz lovers and dance lovers alike.

Jazz Moves Take 2 is at the Capitol Theatre Feb. 5 through 14.
