During Finals Week at Ohio State, there is one thing can be counted on: the libraries will be packed.

But with the increased traffic comes extra concern.

“When it’s more crowded there are more things to keep an eye on,” said Erica Iles, a fourth-year in biology who works security at William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library. “It’s a lot busier and even though it’s mostly students, there will be more sketchy people as well.”

Normally the security staff walks around every other hour to count how many people are in the library. During Finals Week, though, the staff is expected to make their rounds every hour to maintain a security presence.

“We’re basically just looking for unattended stuff and random or emergency situations,” Iles said.

Logan Minard, a first-year in electrical and computer engineering, said Finals Week in Thompson is stressful because the library is packed.

“It’s always ridiculously busy and I can never find a spot,” Minard said. “I normally go with a group and I can never find a table that works for all of us.”

However, Minard said he wasn’t concerned about security.

“I really haven’t thought about it, not at the library really,” Minard said. “If I go to the bathroom and I’m by myself I make sure I bring my backpack with me.”

When there are items left unattended procedure is to collect the items and take them to the security desk.

“Or we stand there and watch it until someone comes back,” Iles said.

Though the library is busiest during Finals Week, the spike in attendance doesn’t affect some students.

“I haven’t really gone there to study at all,” said Matt Straughn, a first-year in electrical and computer engineering.

The library extends its hours of operation an extra two hours during Finals Week, staying open until 2 a.m., however many students don’t take advantage of the extra time, Iles said.

“By midnight no one is really here,” Iles said.

Thompson Library will have reduced hours during the summer break, 7:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
