BalletMet Columbus, in honor of its 20th Anniversary Season, presents “Master Works/Master Artists” today through Saturday at the Ohio Theatre with The Columbus Symphony Orchestra.”As a diverse company, one of BalletMet’s commitments to central Ohio is to expose audiences to legendary dance performed by world-class artists,” said Artistic Director David Nixon in a press release. “We are thrilled to be able to present this extraordinary range of talent during one of our most important seasons ever.”During this star-performing night, American Ballet Theatre principal dancers Susan Jaffe and Ethan Stiefel will be performing with company dancers in Marius Petipa’s “La Bayadere.” Jaffe has danced as a guest artist with companies around the world and most recently appeared with the English National Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, The Royal Danish Ballet, The Royal Swedish Ballet and La Scala Ballet in Milan. Stiefel, formerly of the Zurich Ballet, became a principal dancer with New York City Ballet in 1995 and a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre in 1997. He has appeared in France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Russia and throughout the United States.”This is a chance in a lifetime to see premier artists such as Susan Jaffe, such opportunities do not get here very often,” said Temple Custer, communications manager at BalletMet.The best continues when lead performers of the National Ballet of Canada perform Glen Tetley’s highly acclaimed “Sphinx” based on Jean Cocteau’s “La Machine Infernale.” The work is set to a concerto by Bohuslav Martinu and tells of the Sphinx’s weariness of her immortality and how her desire to fall in love with a human, Oedipus, leads to her own punishment. Also presented is BalletMet’s company dancers in the company premiere of James Kudelka’s “Desir.” BalletMet is among America’s 15 largest dance companies. The company has toured 24 states and three countries and now reaches an audience of 120,000 annually. BalletMet will conclude their 20th Anniversary Season April 23-26 with the world premiere of Nixon’s “Romeo and Juliet.”
