The Ohio State men’s basketball team did not live up to expectations of first year coach Jim O’Brien after a 73-51 loss to Marathon.”All of the things that we thought we were efficient at were all of the things that this team presented some problems with,” O’Brien said. The Buckeyes got off to a slow start when sophomore Ken Johnson knocked the opening tip-off out of bounds. Despite the opening play, OSU was first to put points on the scoreboard.”I thought in the first half we competed a lot better than we did in the second half,” O’Brien said. Lack of experience and depth could be a contributing factor in the loss to Marathon, a team made up of former college players. The Buckeyes are rebuilding this year after O’Brien revamped the team. Two Freshman, one sophomore, a junior and senior make up the starting lineup. “A lot of it has to do with the team situation and inexperience. The team that we played tonight was very mature, very experienced,” O’Brien said. “I think we are lacking in some leadership.”The Buckeyes trailed Marathon 25-22 at the end of the first half. OSU scored the first point of the second half on a free throw by sophomore center Johnson. Marathon then went on 16-0 run, dominating the start of the second half.OSU had 18 turnovers, nine in each half. “We turned the ball over a lot and we made terrible decisions with the ball,” forward Jason Singleton said. For the second game in a row the team failed to shoot above 50 percent from the foul line. “I think it’s more mental than anything,” Singleton said. “In practice we hit our foul shots. We just need to step up and knock them down.”O’Brien’s biggest concern was when the team got down and looked to each for answers rather than solutions.”We just didn’t get it done,” senior Carlos Davis said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do this week.”The Buckeyes host Kent State Wednesday in its first regular season game.
