A quick glance at the name of the lead singer and the title Jimmie’s Chicken Shack would lead just about anyone to think that the band exists on a whimsical plateau. Doesn’t the name Jimi HaHa scream humor? The band’s lyrics do have a light, humorous feel, but they also have a hard driving sense. Their sound conjures up comparisons to Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers and 311, to name a few.HaHa said that although he often hears comparisons being made, he doesn’t put much stock in them. The band doesn’t sample directly from anybody.”I think it is cool that people hear those things,” HaHa said. “But we would get bored easily if we didn’t develop our own style.”The development of their style has left the band with a lyrical collection that HaHa admits is a little on the humorous side.He said that the band tries to incorporate humor into their songs along with a message that may or may not have a deep meaning, depending on the listener.”A song about milk can be deep or light,” HaHa said. “It just depends on how you interpret the lyrics.”In fact, HaHa said that each person should use their own interpretations for the songs they hear. He said that illustrates the power of music.”Music is therapy for the listener and the player,” HaHa said. “You listen to music when you are pissed and when you are happy. It can make you feel better or worse.”HaHa said Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is named after an old blues restaurant in Harlem where Malcolm X used to hang out before he became nationally famous. They came upon the restaurant and its history in a biography about Malcolm X.HaHa said the name of the restaurant caught their attention initially because of the word Jimmie. But the name has no pertinence to the band’s beliefs.Jimmie’s Chicken Shack is currently on tour in support of their debut album, “Pushing the Salmanilla Envelope.” They are opening for the band Everclear. The two bands will perform at the Newport Music Hall on March 14.”The concert is usually a very surreal event,” HaHa said. “It should be a really good night of music.”
