On Saturday, the Dayton Bombers learned firsthand what it is like to face an angry, motivated Columbus Chill squad. After suffering an embarrassing home loss to Chesapeake on Friday, in which they squandered a two-goal lead giving Chesapeake its first win of the season, the Chill responded by crushing Dayton 5-1 in front of 5,284 fans at the Coliseum.”We talked yesterday about being stung,” Chill coach Don Granato said. “Obviously guys felt that, and responded tonight with hustle.””We got outworked at home last night and we can’t allow that,” Granato said. “We made it a priority to not let the other team outwork us.”Chill forward Lorne Toews set the tone early in the first period by leveling a Bomber with a thunderous check that jarred the puck free and caused a turnover.Forward Matt Oates quickly picked the puck up and fired it off of the pads of Dayton goaltender Jean-Ian Filliatrault, but Chill defenseman Beau Bilek was there to chip the rebound in for his first goal of the season.”We really had to be physical and put pressure on them in the first period to let them know they were in for a long game,” Toews said. “It was in everyone’s mind to come out and be physical, and it resulted in a couple of our goals today.”Dayton then responded by outshooting the Chill 18-9 for the rest of the first period, but Chill goaltender David Brumby made a number of difficult saves to preserve the 1-0 lead.”Brumby made some great saves that kept us in it until the second period, when we came out and picked it up,” Chill forward Tim Fingerhut said.Less than four minutes into the second period, the Chill increased their lead when Scott Blair raced by a Bomber defender and passed the puck to Toews who buried a one-time shot past a stunned Filliatrault for a 2-0 lead. One minute later, Filliatrault made a diving save on a hard slap shot by Mark Turner, but Fingerhut was there to collect the rebound and lift the puck over the fallen goaltender for the 3-0 lead.Dayton finally got on the scoreboard when Sal Manganaro tapped in a rebound after Brumby made the initial save with his skate, but Fingerhut would not allow the Bombers back into the game as he scored on a power play at 12:34 of the second period. The Chill then iced the game with another power-play goal early in the third period. Defenseman Marty Wilford deflected the puck off of a Bomber skate and into the Dayton goal. The Bombers tried to mount a comeback in the third period with a number of good scoring opportunities, but Brumby made several more tough saves to preserve the 5-1 victory. Brumby finished with a game-high 39 saves, improving his overall record to 3-2 and lowering his goals-against average to 1.85.”Tonight I felt pretty solid,” Brumby said. “I was very happy with how I played and how the team played overall.”Brumby said that the team may be off to a slow start, but he still feels the Chill (4-5) has the talent to win the ECHL championship.”We are going to be great,” Brumby said. “The playoffs are where it counts and I think that with the team we have, we’re going to be a contender this year.”
