All season long, Ohio State field hockey coach Anne Wilkinson has warned her team that it must capitalize on goal scoring opportunities in order to win games. On Wednesday, the Buckeyes (8-8, 4-4) once again missed out on a number of scoring chances as they outshot Kent 17-10, but lost the game 2-1 in front of a small crowd at the Woody Hayes Athletic Complex.”The difference in this game was that when Kent got the opportunity to get shots on goal, they took advantage of it,” Wilkinson said. “They have some players that can really finish, and we just didn’t finish today.””Statistically we beat them, but that doesn’t really matter. It’s who can finish it.”Kent coach Kerry Hogan said the win was important for her team from a confidence standpoint.”There used to be a big discrepancy between Big Ten teams and Mac teams, and now Mac teams like Kent are getting better and are able to compete with Big Ten teams,” Hogan said.”It’s good to be able to come out with a Big Ten win and it’s good to see our team is able to compete at this level.”The teams played evenly throughout most of the first half, before OSU forward Britta Eickhoff blistered a shot past Kent goaltender Kelly Walker to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.OSU forward Mieke van Ulden and defender Jessica Findeison assisted on the goal, which came off of a penalty corner with no time remaining in the first half.Kent forward Maggie Downey tied the score just two minutes into the second half after stealing the ball in the OSU defensive zone and shooting it past OSU goaltender Nikki Thompson. With just over 22 minutes remaining, OSU forward Lynn Carahaly deflected a shot towardsthe net, but Walker made a diving save to deny the goal. The Buckeyes then had several other chances to retake the lead off of five second half penalty corners but either shot the ball wide or were stopped by Walker.OSU defender Felicia Smith made a difficult defensive save with 10 minutes remaining, but three minutes later, Kent forward Jakolien van Eijk fired a goal through the legs of a defender and past Thompson for the win.OSU forward Camilla Robinson said that the Buckeyes understand that they need to capitalize more on offense and are going to work hard to improve on finishing goals for their next home game against Iowa on Friday.”I think we need to finish better,” Robinson said. “Our next game against Iowa is going to be big, so we need to stop messing around and learn what we need to do to improve our offense and get it going.”
