The Columbus Division of Fire Arson Bureau has ruled that the cause of a fire at a vacant High Street building Sunday was arson.Dave Thompson, an fire investigator for the arson bureau, said the fire was intentionally set on the third level when wooden boards and trash were ignited.”A fire can be determined as arson if you are able to eliminate all accidental ignition sources,” he said. This fire was not the first for the building, said Bill Goldman, an attorney for the Hadler Realty Company, which is handling the sale of the building. Thompson confirmed that this was the second fire reported for the building in three days.Although no arrests have been made, the bureau does have a possible suspect. Thompson said he is still attempting to contact the suspect.”I can’t comment any further at this time, because its still under investigation,” he said. The penalty for arson varies depending on what is started on fire, said Thompson. He said that conviction sentences range from one to 25 years in prison. Dick Braun, deputy chief of the Columbus Division of Fire, estimated the damage to the building to be between $15,000 to $20,000 Sunday. Although the fire was set on the outside porch, “the porch is attached to the building, therefore it is considered to be the building,” said Thompson.Goldman said the building, formerly the site of StreetSide Disks and Cassettes, is now contracted for the Nebraska Books Company.
