With beautiful scenic pictures and descriptive action shots of African animals, people can actually feel as if they are on a safari when viewing “SHARP FOCUS: Dr. Howard Sirak’s Photographs of Africa” a photo exhibit on display at the OSU Faculty Club. “He was an excellent candidate (to have his pictures viewed at the Faculty Club), because of his deep involvement with the university,” said Marion Fisher, art coordinator of the Faculty Club. “He is also an excellent photographer, because of the high quality in his art.”Sirak, a former member and chairman of the OSU Board of Trustees and professor of surgery in the division of thoracic surgery at the College of Medicine, has been selected to exhibit 30 of his 2,000 matted photographs that he has collected over a ten year span.”Since my retirement, I have been taking pictures and I really love and enjoy it.” Sirak said. “I take pictures of anything; from people to insects.”Sirak said he began photographing, when he and his wife made their first trip to Africa in 1986. Since then, he has visited the continent eight times and recently visited Spain and Costa Rica.”We have gotten to see the Great Migration (of all the animals), Kenya and also the gorillas in eastern Zaire.” Sirak said. “I am going to keep on going to Africa as long as I am able.”As a former professor, Sirak says his works of art can also be used as learning tools. Along with the photographs, he offers first hand perspectives, facts about the animals displayed and geographical information as background for the viewers of his photographs.”I know a lot about these animals,” Sirak said. “So coming from a background of teaching, I am always inclined to inform.””SHARP FOCUS: Dr. Howard Sirak’s Photographs of Africa” is on display now through June 27 at the OSU Faculty Club, 101 South Oval Dr. The Faculty Club art exhibition, which presents art of selected OSU faculty, staff and alumni, is free and open to the public.
