The decision hasn’t yet been made, but one thing is certain: The final starting position on the Ohio State men’s basketball team will be filled by an inexperienced freshman guard.Buckeye freshman guards Michael Redd and Jon Sanderson have only one day left to show coach Jim O’Brien that they have what it takes to be the starter.”I’m very happy with the progress both these guys are making,” O’Brien said. “They’re both gonna get a lot of minutes and both of those kids are gonna get a lot of experience early in their careers.”Jon Sanderson, at 6 feet 7 inches, is a versatile guard who can also play the forward position. In his senior year at Lexington High School, Sanderson averaged 17.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3 assists per game.”I’m gonna come and play hard everyday,” Sanderson said. “If I have an open ‘J’ I’ll hit it. I’ll handle the ball, do whatever it takes to win ball games.”Sanderson said whether he is a starter or the sixth man doesn’t matter, he just wants to play.Redd is a local player who graduated from Columbus West High School. As a senior, the 6-foot-5-inch guard averaged 25.7 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game.Starting right away is not the Holy Grail for Redd either.”Hopefully, I can get in and try to do my thing and try to impress the coaches if I can,” Redd said.Redd’s taste in uniform numbers may say something about his confidence. He will be the first player to sport No. 22 since Ohio State legend Jim Jackson led the Buckeyes to the Final Eight in 1992. The nervousness is setting in as Redd and Sanderson anxiously await their college debuts on Saturday.”I always have jitters before a game,” Redd said. “It’s gonna be a big game for me because it’s my first college game, but I think I’ll be ready by Saturday.”
