For Savion Glover, sometimes the best advice is motherly advice.”My mom’s full of them,” said the acclaimed tap dancer between sniffs. “Like, ‘If you don’t love it, don’t do it.'”Judging from that piece of wisdom, Glover obviously loves to tap. Although he seemed to have a bit of a cold, Glover pulled off a stunning performance before a crowd of about 2,000 elementary school children at Mershon Auditorium Nov. 6. “We loved it,” said Stephen Gouge, a student from Hubbard Elementary School. “I liked how loud (the tap dancing) was.”Many kids recognized Glover from “Sesame Street,” where he was a regular for five seasons.”He tap danced with Elmo,” recalled Rufus Morgan, another Hubbard Elementary School student.Glover and company wowed their audience with excerpts from Glover’s concert that begins this weekend. The concert contains no particular storyline, Glover said.”It’s just tap dancing in a concert with some special guests,” he said. “We’ll give you a display of rhythm.”At Mershon, Glover was backed by his new dance company, the appropriately named Not Your Ordinary Tappers (NYOTs).”I want to change that whole theatrical thing,” Glover said. “We like to get off the bus, drop our things off in the dressing room and just go. None of this standing around for 30 minutes, stretching and stuff ‹ we just like to get out there and hit it.”Glover, 23, made his first appearance at the Wexner Center for the Arts in 1994 as a guest with Lynn Dally’s Jazz Tap Ensemble. He was originally slated to return in March, but with the success of his sold-out Broadway show “Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk,” his appearance was postponed. Currently on creative residency at the Wexner Center, Glover has been developing his new concert and putting together his current tour. Glover has won several awards for his choreography. He won a 1996 Tony Award for “Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk.” When he was 18, Glover received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant for choreography, making him the youngest recipient in NEA history. Glover has worked with a wide range of talented entertainers, including Gregory Hines, Kenny G and Puff Daddy.”Savion Glover is a dazzling talent,” said Wexner Center Director Sherri Geldin. “His innovative approach to tap has reinvigorated the art form.””Savion Glover in Concert” runs Thursday through Saturday, with shows beginning at 8 p.m. It will also show Sunday at 2 p.m. and at 7 p.m. The final show is on Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. All shows will be held at Mershon Auditorium, 1871 N.
