The arson bureau is investigating a two-alarm fire that burned part of a High Street building yesterday. The fire burned a section of the roof in the vacant building formerly occupied by Street Side Disks and Cassettes.”Some boards were lit on the back porch and the fire worked its way into the roof,” said Deputy Chief Dick Braun of the Columbus Division of Fire. “It looks very suspicious. The arson bureau is on the way to check it out.”Braun said the fire burned for about 15 to 20 minutes before it was extinguished.”Plexiglass windows are hard to break,” said Braun, “so we went through the door.”Damage is estimated to be in the range of $15,000 to $20,000, Braun said. Leslee Cohen, a senior majoring in family relations, said she was leaving her apartment near the back of the vacant building when she smelled smoke.”I walked toward the building and saw lots of smoke coming off of the roof, so I ran back inside, and my roommate and I called 911,” Cohen said. Aaron Hendler, an employee at Disc Go Round, said, “I never saw flames, just a great deal of smoke coming from the roof.””The fire started in the back and they tried to break a window but they couldn’t,” said eyewitness Sari Gordon, a senior majoring in communications. “Then they tried to knock a door down and they couldn’t do that either,” Sari said. “It was scary, it looked like the entire roof was on fire.”Ted Burke, owner of the Daily Squeeze, said he heard noises coming from outside the vacant building at about 10 p.m. on Friday night.”I saw some kids lighting fires there Friday night when I was taking out the trash,” Burke said. “I saw flames so I called the cops.”
