Thanks to a new lot, students in search of a parking space on High Street can get relief, but they’d better be quick. The lot has only 36 spaces. The new student C parking lot opened up this week on High Street between Maxwell’s Bar and Panini’s Bar & Grille. The land was purchased by Campus Partners last February for about $425,000, said Steve Sterrett, spokesman for Campus Partners. The lot is located where Papa Joe’s Pizza and Waterbed’s and Stuff were located. The two businesses were destroyed by fire in April 1996.OSU entered into an agreement with Campus Partners in which the land on 1573-1581 N. High St. will be leased for two years, said Sarah Blouch, director of OSU transportation and parking services. The space is being rented for a nominal amount of $1 per month, Sterrett said. However, OSU must reimburse for improvements to the lot, such as the adding of gravel, he said.Blouch said it will cost the university about $25,000 for the 36 spaces. The lot is close to Drinko Hall, which houses the College of Law, 55 W. 12th Ave. This has some law students pleased.Jeff Miller, a first-year law student, said he has saved 10-15 minutes in the last four days in parking time. He said he used to park at meters and received numerous parking tickets.Julia Hilty, a third-year law student said she was pleased with the lot because of it is in close proximity to the law building.OSU Police Chief Ron Michalec said Columbus police are responsible for any safety issues in the lot, not the university police. However, OSU traffic and parking will patrol the lot to check for parking passes, Blouch said.Juniors and seniors may purchase a C pass for $42, Blouch said. Passes purchased now will run through September.Campus Partners was established in January 1995 by Ohio State and the city of Columbus to lead a campus-area revitalization effort and develop a comprehensive plan.
