For the first time in five years, student trustees from 11 of the 13 public universities in Ohio met this weekend at the Fawcett Center. The trustees met to discuss their experiences, trustee voting rights and questions over the right to attend executive sessions, said Soraya Rofagha, an Ohio State student trustee and sophomore majoring in molecular genetics and international studies. The sharing of the best practices each university board uses, would help to create a better understanding and better communication between the student boards, said Dave Arlinghaus, a Miami University student trustee Arlinghaus. The trustees are appointed to two-year terms.”I’m here to get a feel for how others get things done,” said David N. Myhal, trustee for Youngstown State University.Myhal has been a trustee for six weeks. He said he knows some of the Youngstown board members, but attended the meeting to get up to speed on what other trustees are doing.Richard Sisson, OSU provost, said student trustees are a recent evolution of rights and responsibilities.”The key is how to make the best of the two years the students are members,” Sisson said.As new members, students are at a disadvantage because they serve only two years, compared to the full members who serve nine-year terms, Sisson said. OSU allows its students to attend the executive session, Rofagha said. “The key is how to make the best of the two years the students are member,” Sisson said. “We need to have a more effective orientation to help get into the culture of the board.”
