OSU can “settle” for $58 million arena

David E. Wallin’s letter to the editor argues for seat licensing at the new Schottenstein Arena, and takes issue with the Lantern’s opposition to such a practice. He asks “Should we get rid of those evil seat licenses and settle for a $58 million arena?” In my opinion, $58 million dollars is hardly considered settling. Has Wallin forgotten that the main purpose of OSU is for educating students? I’d love to see $58 million dollars raised for the purpose of education on this campus. Besides, as he points out, those who purchase the seat licenses are “financially successful.” How many OSU students could be considered “financially successful?” My guess would be very few. Let us not forget that the teams that will be playing in the Schottenstein Center are not professional, but rather the teams that are representing our school. The athletes that make up these teams are also students, just like the rest of us. I think I’d rather “settle” for a $58 million arena, than see 4500 seats that could have been used for students, and other lowly un- “financially successful” fans than to see our seats sold to the highest bidder.
