‘Everything’s coming up Roses,’ and ‘California Here We Come’ have been heard throughout Columbus as Ohio State prepares to take its place in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses for the 13th time. The Tournament of Roses has a long-standing history that began back in 1890 with the first Rose Bowl parade. It was staged by members of Pasadena’s Valley Hunt Club to showcase California’s blooming flowers during the winter time. More than 2,000 people turned out to watch the flower covered floats which was followed by footraces, polo matches and tugs-of war on the town lot. The festival expanded to include marching bands and motorized floats, viewing stands were built and Eastern newspapers started to take notice. The Tournament of Roses Association was formed in 1895 to handle the huge event.Today, the seven-mile parade is one of the most recognized around the country and the world. Thousands of people sleep over night on the parade route just to get a glimpse of the spectacle. It includes multi-million dollar floats covered in flowers, 22 marching bands that are chosen from 200 applicants, and the Pac-10 and Big Ten bands and floats. In 1902, the Tournament of Roses Association decided to add to the day’s activities with a football game. The game was so one-sided that it was replaced by Roman-style chariot races. In 1916, football returned to stay and the crowds grew dramatically year after year. The original stadium was built in 1920 and held 57,000 people in its horseshoe shape. Prior to that, the game was played in Tournament park which was quickly outgrown as the game of football took shape. In 1923, the stadium was named the Rose Bowl by a local newspaper reporter and the first football game was played in it. Filling in the south end and other expansions lead to the current capacity of over 100,000.OSU has played in 12 previous Rose Bowl games. Their record is 5-7 with their last victory in 1974 and their last appearance in 1985.The 1997 Rose Bowl will feature OSU and Arizona State in a 5 p.m. (EST) kickoff. The last time ASU was in the Rose Bowl was John Cooper’s last year as their head coach when they beat Michigan 22-15 back in 1987. The two schools have only played each other one time, back in 1980 when OSU beat ASU 38-21 in Columbus. This is the last year before the Rose Bowl will be part of the bowl alliance and a dozen year absence. The Buckeyes will truly be a great representative in the ‘Grand daddy of them all.’
