The new thriller “Hush,” starring Jessica Lange and Gwyneth Paltrow, can be lumped into that category of movies which revolve around an unstable, psychotic woman up to nothing but mischief. Lange does her best in the role of Martha Baring. As the mother-in-law of Helen (Paltrow) she refuses to share her only son and is determined to keep family secrets buried. The movie begins with a storybook romance between a New York couple, Helen and Jackson (Johnathon Schaech). Jackson brings Helen home to his family’s Southern estate, Kilronan, to meet his mother at Christmas. He has never brought a girlfriend home before and is delighted to see his mother welcome her as one of the family. Everything seems perfect at first. When “Mommy Dearest” rigs Helen’s birth control device, she gets pregnant and marries Jackson. The newlyweds decide to leave the city and move to Kilronan temporarily. However, Martha has other plans for Helen. This is when the movie really starts to drag and goes from being OK to absolutely horrible. Some of the lines spoken by the two actresses are laughable, especially when Lange asks the nine months pregnant Paltrow if she’s going to drop her litter in the road like an alley cat. Seriously, there are better one-liners in the “USA Up All Night” movies. That doesn’t even compare to the final confrontation in the film when Jackson yells, “Everything about you is a lie!” to his mother. At this point in the movie, I was wondering how much money was handed to these actors in order for them to be in such a dud. Don’t they know the movie is awful?Personally, I’m over the whole concept of the lunatic bitch in movies. Rarely does it work in films because of weak screenplays, like the one written for “Hush.” Unlike “Misery” or “Fatal Attraction,” “Hush” fails to successfully portray this scenario. Save your money and wait for the movie on HBO. It won’t be long before it’s there.
