If you’re looking for a place to park on campus, make sure you have the right permit. There were 17,469 parking citations issued fall quarter by officers from the Ohio State Transportation and Parking Services.A portion of those were warnings without fines, because the department gave students a grace period at the beginning of the new school year, said Sarah Blouch, director of Parking Services. As the weather gets colder this winter, ticket numbers will probably increase, she said.Everyone wants to park in the central lots when the weather is bad, with or without permits, said Bill Cecil, enforcement officer for the department.According to its mission statement, Parking Services maintains a safe and orderly campus for pedestrians and vehicle operators and provides transportation service for the campus area.”We also make sure the people who have permits have spaces to park in,” Cecil said. The officers have jurisdiction over all campus property, including the golf courses and airport. They also deal with non-injury accidents and anything relating to roads and parking.”Unfortunately, we also have to issue citations,” Cecil said. For this reason, half of the people in the area are always upset with the department while the rest appreciate what they do, he said.Problems with parking continually arise as more and more parking lots are closed for construction. However, it is very easy to avoid getting tickets.”All you need to do is use common sense and obey the signs,” Cecil said.According to year-end figures, 74,449 citations were given in 1997 which generated about $700,000 for the department. This is only 6 percent of total revenue, Blouch said. Parking permit sales and special events parking generate the largest amount of money for Parking Services.
