At the Ohio State football team`s Media Day Friday morning in Ohio Stadium, linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer wasn`t focusing on answering questions about West Virginia, the defensive backfield or the No. 1 ranking. Those questions were simple compared to the ones about summer school and eligibility.Katzenmoyer, offensive guard Rob Murphy and strong safety Damon Moore all fielded questions from members of the media about needing to pass summer quarter classes in order to be eligible for the upcoming season.”All these questions are justified. I screwed up and it`s my fault,” said Katzenmoyer of skipping classes in past quarters. “If I don`t play this year, it`s my own fault. If it happens or if it doesn`t happen, explore it then. Otherwise just let it go.”Katzenmoyer, who needs a 2.0 grade point average in golf, AIDS awareness and music appreciation to play, was often asked the same questions about his academic status three or four times, and answered marginally fewer questions about the opening of practices and the Sept. 5 opener at West Virginia.”In my opinion it`s nobody`s business what happens,” Katzenmoyer said. “They doubted me when I came in here my freshman season. They`re doubting me now. I`m going to be eligible. Just doubt me, and I`ll prove you wrong.”Katzenmoyer had to leave for his music appreciation course before the mid-day autograph session with fans.Moore and Murphy were also questioned about class work but didn`t receive the same onslaught of questions as Katzenmoyer. “When you say Andy Katzenmoyer it`s a big deal,” said Moore who needs credit hours to be eligible. “He`s the heart of the defense. If you take him out of the picture, that`s a pretty big hole. He stops all inside runs. If you lose any key starters it`s going to affect your team.”Moore believes the media is making too much of the players` eligibility status too early. “We`re all going to be all right. I don`t know why people are making such a fuss about it now,” he said. “If we aren`t here Sept. 5, then you guys got free shots on all of us. We`ll all be taken care of. Everybody`s going to make it.”If I wasn`t sure I`d pass, I wouldn`t be here. I`d be home studying.”Murphy seemed slightly overwhelmed by the attention the players` academic situation was given. “It`s all been blown out of proportion. I was talking to the press yesterday and it was all academic. I told them I was in football camp, and I`m going to play football,” Murphy said.”I`m 100 percent totally confident (I`ll pass). I`ve been going to class, doing my work. It just so happens that I don`t need any outstanding grades. I just need to get a grade in the class,” he said. ” I can speak for all three of us in saying that we`re all going to class and doing what we need to do.”Murphy cited a football injury suffered last winter that contributed to him falling behind in his course work. Both Katzenmoyer and Moore have cited personal problems.Head coach John Cooper was brief in his statements concerning his players` grades. “I`ve handled this by answering these questions,” said Cooper when asked how this had affected his team`s workouts and practices. “I`m not happy about it. I`m not happy when a guy misses practice. Obviously we`re going to have guys missing practices because they`re in summer school.”The players will know their grades a couple weeks before the season begins, but the grades will not be official until the day before West Virginia.
