Attempting to clear the air after last week’s incident involving Yasser Arafat, a private meeting was held Tuesday between Ohio State President William “Brit” Kirwan and five Arab Student Association members.Jad A. Humeidan, president of the Arab Student Association, said one of the main reasons he wanted to have the meeting was to bring closure to last week’s incident with Arafat.”We also wanted to discuss with the president and maybe get an explanation of what happened, why it happened and then try to avoid things like this from happening in the future,” Humeidan said. The meeting took place in the wake of an incident in which the Arab Student Association withdrew a letter to Arafat inviting him to speak at OSU. The association said the administration insisted the group invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The president’s office contended it wanted to take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to have both world leaders on the same stage. Kirwan couldn’t be reached for further comment. It a missed opportunity for everyone at OSU, Humeidan said.”We asked for an apology to go out to the Arab community in Columbus and the OSU community as a whole,” he said. “Kirwan explained that it was a misunderstanding within the university itself and promised that something will come out in the media.”Humeidan said he knew they weren’t going to settle everything and wanted to be able to go back to Kirwan in the future.”We didn’t go in with a list of demands,” Humeidan said. “We went with some suggestions of what we would like to see happen at OSU.”Kirwan is very committed to the diversity issue and hopes he makes the Arabs and Arab Americans part of it, Humeidan said.”We really want to be involved,” he said. “Sometimes we feel left out of OSU and the whole system.”If everything that Kirwan said happens, then the meeting was successful, Humeidan said.”We feel like OSU is our family,” Humeidan said. “We want to be proud of OSU and not do anything to ruin the reputation of OSU.”
