In a world where special effect films litter the movie landscape, a new film examine the resonating horrors of the past and its effect on the present. Talk show titan Oprah Winfrey returns to the big screen in the movie “Beloved.” It’s her first starring role in a feature film since earning an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in “The Color Purple”.Winfrey, along with acclaimed actors Danny Glover, Kimberly Elise and Thandie Newton, brings “Beloved” to the silver screen from the pages of Toni Morrison’s 1987 Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Morrison has also received a Nobel Prize for Literature. Her works include, “The Bluest Eye,” “Tar Baby,” “Song of Solomon,” and “Jazz.” The movie “Beloved” begins just outside of Cincinnati in 1873. The main character Sethe, played by Winfrey, is a single mother who escaped slavery and has three children. Their house is haunted, until Beloved appears in their front yard. Beloved, a mysterious character, ends up living with the family and opens up questions about Sethe’s past. The movie jumps back and forth between 1873, the time of Beloved’s arrival, and to the time when Sethe and her family were slaves on a plantation called “Sweet Home”. The movie has some extremely graphic scenes depicting the violence of slavery. These scenes also lay a foundation for the reason Sethe has some of her values and the reason she goes to extremes.”Beloved” goes in a lot of different directions all at one time, but the movie does a good job of developing the complex characters. The audience gets to know exactly how the different individuals feel. This movie takes the viewer on a emotional ride making you laugh, cry, scream, and feel totally disgusted all in an effort to bring the cast closer to the audience.”Beloved” is a movie for people who like history, and can follow a lot of different stories at one time. There are a lot of different things that people can learn from this movie, but it is also entertaining. “Beloved” leaves some questions unanswered, but if you like good acting and want to see a different kind of movie this film is for you.
