Who says that older women can`t have fun, or date younger men? It certainly wasn`t Stella.Terry McMillan`s “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” challenges the societal rule that older women can`t date younger men and helps prove that “girls just want to have fun.”This movie, based on McMillan`s novel, is about a 40-year-old, high-salaried stock broker named Stella, played by Angela Bassett, who has gotten so used to her everyday routine that she has forgotten how to have fun. She`s lost her groove. However, a trip to Jamaica with her best friend Delilah, played by Whoopi Goldberg, and an encounter with a native named Winston, played by Taye Diggs, helps change all that. There`s only one problem: He`s only 20 years old.Stella now has to decide whether she should listen to what everyone else thinks, or follow her own heart and pursue a relationship with Winston. One particular scene exemplifies the struggle that Stella must go through. In this scene, Stella comes back from her trip to Jamaica and her sisters Vanessa (Regina King), and Angela (Suzzanne Douglas), are at her house awaiting her return. Angela voices her opinion that she is very upset with Stella for having a “fling” with a man she hardly knows. Also posing a problem is the fact that the man is half her age. Vanessa, on the other hand, is glad her big sister had a little fun and provides words of encouragement despite Angela`s disapproval. Her family`s personal opinions are not the only thing Stella has on her mind. The age difference is hard for even her to handle. There was one instance in the movie when Stella and Winston were ordering drinks and the bartender, a young beautiful woman, made the comment that Stella and her “son” looked happy to see each other. At first Stella was upset, but Winston said, “Yes, let me show you how happy I am,” and planted a kiss on Stella that made the bartender blush. Now to all those who have read the book, let this be a warning. This movie is not exactly like the book. While the characters and the scenario is the same, many events are different and twisted. Do not let this discourage you from seeing the movie. Believe me, it`s worth it.The scenes shot in Jamaica are so beautiful that it makes you want to book the next flight there. For the ladies, Diggs is a dream come true as the character of Winston. He`s handsome, charming, extremely sexy and has a killer smile. But men, don`t feel left out! Bassett has never looked more beautiful or more in shape. No one else besides Bassett could have done Stella justice. The rest of the cast really help make the movie. Michael J. Pagan plays Quincy, Stella`s 11-year-old son. His character is very realistic and he wants to protect his mother from being hurt by a man.Goldberg, King and Douglas provide humor to this movie with their great acting skills. The side comments and personal opinions of their characters bring the movie together. The movie, directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, was presented by Twentieth Century Fox. Ron Bass co-wrote the screenplay with McMillan. What most people don`t know is that this story is a fictionalized account of a similar encounter McMillan had with a Jamaican native that was also 20 years younger than she. Her personal experience and writing skills help create a movie that has it all: comedy, tragedy, suspense and most of all, romance.
