What do you call a guy who has played every minute of every match for the Ohio State men’s volleyball team?Superman.Angel Aja, a Puerto Rico native, has played a key role in the success of this year’s squad. The junior setter has led the Buckeyes to a No. 6 rank in the USA TODAY/AVCA Poll and a 10-3 overall record.”When Angel plays well, our team plays well,” coach Pete Hanson said.As a freshman, Aja was an OSU Scholar-Athlete and a second team Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association All-Conference choice. He also set a match record for assists with 124 against Southern California.”I don’t really care much about the number of assists I have,” he said. “I’m more concerned with our team winning.”He followed up his freshman year with an outstanding sophomore campaign. In 1998, the Bucks finished with a 25-2 record, 10-0 in conference play. For his efforts, Aja was named an AVCA First-team All-American and selected for the MIVA All-Conference first team. He led the conference with a 18.77 points per-game average, and was ranked second in the country.Aja downplays his achievements on the court. It’s clear that the man of steel doesn’t see what the big deal is. He just goes out every match and competes to the best of his ability, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by his coach and teammates.”Aja has great ball skills,” Hanson said. “He can take any bad pass and turn it into a great set.” Fellow teammate Rene’ Esteves had words of praise for Aja’s performances.”He has a good understanding of the game and his players,” Esteves said. “Aja’s aggressiveness makes him effective.”This year Aja was named to the all-tournament in the Golden Dome Volleyball Classic. He recorded six kills, nine blocks, 10 digs and 189 assists. At the moment, Aja leads the country in assists per game with 19.95. He has recorded two 100-plus assist matches this season. He also leads the team in ace serves with 12 and is averaging 1.52 digs. The one aspect of Aja’s game that needs improvement is his defense, Hanson explained.”He is not digging enough balls to suit me,” Hanson said. For him to be a complete player, Hanson said, Aja needs to work on his blocking and defense. The transition from Puerto Rico to the United States has been smooth for Aja.”My college experience has been great,” Aja said. He said he loves OSU, the students, coaches and that the facilities are great. After graduation, Aja would like to play volleyball overseas or work in the field of international business. The Buckeyes will try to extend their eight-game winning streak against Rutgers-Newark, Saturday at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
