The Virgin Megastore at the new Easton Towne Center has opened but other Columbus-area music stores are not intimidated.”We’re not sweating it,” said Brad Jeffries, an employee at Borders Books and Music on Kenny Road. “I think the opening might initially affect us, but as far as long-term effects, we don’t feel like anything is going to change.” Other retailers agreed.”We’ve heard a lot of talk about the Megastore, but there does not seem to be any substantial drop in sales,” said Kate Marvel, an employee at the Barnes and Noble music department in the Lennox Town Center.”We are not going to change the way we are handling our department because of the Megastore,” Marvel said. The Virgin Megastore in Easton is a 25,000-square foot music and entertainment retailer and the 20th Megastore in the Virgin Entertainment Group. The store offers 150,000 music titles on CD and cassette, 20,000 movie and music titles on DVD and video, over 2,000 multimedia software titles and a specialty book section.Located throughout the store are music listening stations where customers can sample over 350 full-length CDs.But Marvel believes the store’s distance from Ohio State’s campus outweighs its selling points. “Traffic is heavy in that area, and it is quite a drive for students,” Marvel said. “You can take the bus here.” Jennifer Carlston, a sophomore majoring in public relations, said she would still drive the 20 minutes to the Megastore.”The CDs are so much cheaper and they have everything that anyone could possibly want. You can even make your own CDs,” she said. “Virgin on Demand” is the world’s first digital download and fulfillment system. Customers can download songs from various Internet sites and assemble their own CDs of up to 10 songs for $9.99. The system is similar to a CD burner.”Right now, we only have the 300 licensed Internet sites, but we expect to have about 5,000 titles by September,” said Steve Osmun, general manager of the Virgin Megastore.”We were not expecting to do this well this quickly,” Osmun said. “We do not expect sales to slow down. The store is doing extremely well.”
