There have not been many favorable reviews for the movie “Any Given Sunday,” and its soundtrack isn’t much better.Despite the fact that a lot of big names in hip-hop and hard rock perform on this disc, none of the tracks creates a very good atmosphere. Not the kind of music people would listen to at a bar or a party. Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott is on the first track, “Who You Gonna Call.” Beginning the rather depressing theme of the CD, Elliott describes a hopeless situation, saying no matter how high someone gets, they’re going to come down.Capone-N-Noreaga come together for “Reunion,” where descriptions of violence and a hard life give the track a very angry sound.Track three is Mobb Deep with the song “Never Goin’ Back,” another song describing a rough life where they can never quite succeed. Midway through the song, the theme changes to one of success. The group says they will never forget where they came from, yet the music remains dark.Goodie Mob and Outkast combine for “Sole Sunday,” another hopeless track with an almost pop music refrain. One of the bigger names on the CD is L.L. Cool J. His song “Shut ’em Down” is probably the only song on the CD that will get much radio play. This song is also dark and describes a lot of pain.Trick Daddy, Trina, Deuce Poppi and Co. are the performers on the track “Shut Up.” By far, those two words are said most in the song. It is still a dark sound, but this time they are bragging about luxury cars and they sound as if they just don’t care. The movie’s theme, “Any Given Sunday,” apparently has the voice of another of the movie’s stars, Jamie Foxx featuring Guru and Common. This time the lyrics are more positive, but is still a slow track discussing hardship. At this point the CD makes a drastic change, switching from a hip-hop sound to hard rock. P.O.D.’s “Whatever it Takes” has a hard rock sound and some of the lyrics sound like rap.Kid Rock is the next hard rock and rap hybrid, performing a previously unreleased track that will never make the radio because of the f*** word. This confrontational track is a refusal to follow orders. The next song on the CD is the hard rock, alternative sound of Hole. “Be a Man” uses a driving guitar and Courtney Love’s grinding voice to make the song very loud. After several hip-hop and hard rock songs, Jamie Foxx performs the final track on the CD called “Any Given Sunday Outro.” This song is more up-beat than any other on the disk and surprisingly, Jamie Foxx has a good voice.
