Records release Ballad Session.Turner, an internationally acclaimed tenor saxophonist is described as a quintessential jazz man, meaning he perfectly exemplifies jazz music. In Ballad Session, Turner explores relationships in a musical sense. From feeling like you are on cloud nine to complete loneliness, Turner covers all aspects of love. The first song, “I Loves You Porgy,” from the Gershwin/Gershwin/ Heyward musical “Porgy and Bess,” has a feeling of intense love for someone. In contrast, songs like “No More” and “All or Nothing At All” give the feeling of someone who is fed up with mistreatment and disregard in a relationship.”Visions” and “Alone and I” are seemingly songs of the acceptance of being alone. They are somber, yet comforting. Turner describes this project as “bright yet dark.” The instrumental accompaniment ranges from quartets and quintets to a single trio. The musicians Turner worked with are friends of his who have the reputation of being celebrated young artists in the music genre. They are guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummer Brian Blade and keyboardist Kevin Hays.Turner’s fourth release with Warner Bros. follows his solo debut Mark Turner, his duet with jazz great James Moody on Warner Jams and Vol. 2: The Two Tenors. Overall, Ballad Session is an exploration through the ups and downs of love and Turner is the tour guide.
