After repeated violations of university and Interfraternity Council regulations, the charter for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter at Ohio State has been revoked effective immediately and will remain in place through December 2002. This means that the fraternity will not be recognized as a student organization and may not recruit new members or use university facilities, advisers, or funds. “Over the last few months SAE has been under review,” said William Hall, interim vice president for student affairs. “It is regrettable that the situation had to end this way.” During the past year SAE has committed violations of IFC and the Women’s Panhellenic Association alcohol policy. The violations included hosting a party during rush where alcohol was present. John Carney, a junior in business and member of SAE said that the fraternity tried to pull itself together. “Our house earned Most Improved Chapter Award and also held one of the highest grade point averages in the greek system last year,” Carney said. Brandon Weghorst, the coordinator of media and publications for SAE’s national headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, said the group is ” disappointed that our 108-year tradition at Ohio State is coming to an end.” Weghorst went on to say that the organization does not condone inappropriate behavior and respects the university’s decision. Currently, SAE’s OSU chapter has approximately 57 members, half of whom reside at the chapter house on Indianola Avenue. As far as housing, it is up to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon headquarters and alumni housing corporation to decide if the members currently living in the chapter house will be allowed to stay. “The university will assist the members in relocating to another housing facility if it comes to that,” Hall said. During a meeting with Hall, conditions were set to establish a probationary period for the fraternity. They include refraining from organizational activities and property damage or vandalism to the chapter house. If these conditions are met, the fraternity will be able to be reinstated at OSU during a probationary period beginning Jan. 5, 2003 until Jan. 4, 2004.
