The Wexner Center begins its double-feature summer series “B-Movie A Go-Go” tomorrow with “Sex Kittens Go to College” (1960) and “Untamed Youth” (1957). Both films star “the girl built like a platinum powerhouse,” Mamie Van Doren.
In “Sex Kittens Go to College,” Van Doren plays Dr. Mathilda West, a former “Tallahassee Tassel-Tosser,” who tries to keep this fact a secret from her new life as the head of a science department. The film also stars Tuesday Weld, Mijanou Bardot (sister of Brigitte Bardot) and Jackie Coogan.
In “Untamed Youth,” Jane and Penny, crazed rock ‘n’ roll teens played by Van Doren and Lori Nelson, are arrested while on their way to Los Angeles. Their retribution is working on a farm, however, their punishment makes them even more unruly.
“These were the movies that any responsible parent would not want their youngsters to see – especially not at one of those drive-in theatres!” said Bruce Bartoo, Wexner Center projectionist.
Each night also opens with the personal collection of choice movie trailers provided by Bartoo. This week’s hip trailers include: “Reform School Girls,” “Mondo Teeno,” “Screaming Mimi,” “Go-Go Mania,” “Caged Heat,” “Common Law Wife,” and “Go Johnny Go!”
“Tawdry trash to turn teens into ticket buyers!” Bartoo said of the trailers.
The series continues with 10 other swinging movies: “Runaway Daughters” (1956) and “Young and Dangerous” (1957), July 18; “The Last Man on Earth” (1964) and “Daughter of Horror (a.k.a. Dementia)” (1953-55), July 25; “Kitten with a Whip” (1964) and “Expresso Bongo” (1959), August 1; “Creature with the Atom Brain” (1955) and “Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb” (1964), August 8; and “Mothra” (1961) and “Battle in Outer Space” (1959), August 15.
This year marks the fourth in a series of hip kitsch classics, following “B-Movie Mania!,” “Bride of B-Movie Mania!” and “The Son of B-Movie Mania.”
