The Ohio State University Marching Band will be honoring one of its own at Ohio Stadium Saturday.
Jack Evans, who directed the OSUMB 12 years, died of a blood infection Wednesday at St. Ann’s hospital at the age of 86. The OSUMB will dedicate its halftime show to Evans at the football game, where OSU faces the University of Illinois.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. inWeigel Hall on the OSU campus, located at 1866 College Rd.Under Evans’ leadership from 1952 to 1963, the OSUMB accompanied the football team on two trips to the Rose Bowl. The OSUMB made their first commercial recording in St. John Arena under the FSR label, after returning from the 1958 Rose Bowl trip.
Evans also established the Activities Band which was later renamed the Buckeye Band, which performed in concerts on campus and at home basketball games. The Buckeye Band was established for non-music majors and has now become the Symphonic and University Bands. Evans was born in Charleston, S.C., and he grew up in Cleveland.
