Listen up guys. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and time is running out to find a gift for that special girl. If the perfect present has still not been found, take note of some suggestions from experts on the receiving end.
This Valentine’s Day, most women don’t want their companions to buy them traditional gifts, such as flowers and candy. Instead, the ladies are hoping that their guys will come up with more clever and personal ideas.
“Last year, my boyfriend bought me chocolates that had probably been sitting on the shelf for a couple months,” said Kristin Evans, a junior in psychology. “This year I’m hoping that he’ll get me something that shows he really cares about me, like a massage for my aching back,” she said.
Others concur. “I’ve had my eye on a particular bracelet for a couple of months now, and I’m hoping that on Valentine’s Day, it’ll be mine,” said Jessica Smith, a senior in Spanish.
Erin Flynn, a senior in business, wants a manicure for Valentine’s Day. “My fiancé said that this was my day and to enjoy it. What better way to enjoy yourself than by being pampered?” she said.
Not all women are interested in receiving costly presents this year. “I think Valentine’s Day is too commercialized,” said Jennifer Norris, a senior in business. “It shouldn’t be about buying gifts; it should be about spending time with the person you care about,” she said.
Karen Nagle, a junior in communications, agrees. “This year for Valentine’s Day, I want to spend time with my boyfriend-just the two of us. He doesn’t need to buy me a gift or anything. I’d be happy just sitting on the couch watching a movie with him,” she said.
As for what girls are planning on giving their guys this year, the gifts are fairly predictable. “I think I’m going to buy my boyfriend cologne this year. Last year I got him a candle and he’s yet to burn it,” said Evans.
Angie Bailey, an OSU alumna, is planning on cooking dinner for her fiancé. “I think he would enjoy a home-cooked meal and a relaxing night at the house. As long as we’re together, we’ll be happy,” she said.
Amanda Snider, an employee at Lair’s Hallmark in the Lane Avenue shopping center, said that most girls have been buying cards for their sweethearts. “It’s still pretty early in the month but I’m sure girls will begin to buy candles and picture frames for their guys as it gets closer to the 14th.”
Over the years Valentine’s Day has been a holiday when people do crazy things in order to win the affections of others. This year, however, it seem as though girls want to give and receive gifts that have more sentimental value.
So, guys, this Valentine’s Day, woo her, wow her, and win her over by giving her something from the heart, not the convenience store.
