Ohio State football player Kurt Wilhelm was charged with felonious assault for allegedly beating a man at Olentangy Commons Apartments early Saturday morning.
He surrendered to police on Tuesday after he became aware that a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Police said that an ongoing dispute between Wilhelm and an unidentified woman turned into violence against a male companion sitting with her in a car.
Police said the 22-year-old man, Ryan Smith, and the woman were seated in a parked car at the complex at about 2:15 a.m. Oct. 26, when Wilhelm confronted them and began physically assaulting Smith.
According to the police report, Smith was transported to Riverside Methodist Hospital where he received treatment for multiple facial fractures.
Wilhelm, a sophomore walk-on from Elyria, Ohio, is the younger brother of senior linebacker Matt Wilhelm. A university official told the Associated Press that head football coach Jim Tressel had been aware of the incident prior to Saturday’s matchup with Penn State and did not allow Wilhelm to dress for the game.
The issue is being investigated, said Steve Snapp, spokesman for the OSU athletics department.
“We are fully aware of the situation, and we’re looking into it,” he said.
